At this point, nearly every business owner in the world knows a little something about search engine optimization. Unless you make your living selling coconuts from a hut deep in the jungle, it is probably something you have talked about with your web design and online marketing team at least a few times.

At least, we hope that is where you are getting your information. Sadly, many business owners are filling their heads with incomplete information, or outright mistruths, coming from uninformed colleagues and disreputable websites. Put another way, there are many misconceptions out there, and people who would love to have your money are spreading many of them.

The kinds of ideas we are talking about do not just make it harder for your business to grow, but also for those of us who know our way around search engine optimization to do our jobs. When it comes down to it, there are five things that SEO experts and consultants wish you knew:

1.      That covering the basics is only a first step. Anyone can change your page titles or at a few meta-tags to your site. That is where the real work begins, however, not where it ends.

2.      That it takes time to improve your rankings in Google, Yahoo, and Bing. "Lightning quick" SEO is probably the closest modern equivalent to snake oil. You can see improvements quickly of course, but if you are in a market that is at all competitive, real and lasting success is going to take some time.

3.      That SEO is always changing, and the competition is not making it easier. What worked even a few years ago would not be as effective now, and more businesses than ever are trying to rank highly on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. That means SEO is always changing, and your approach has to be changing too.

4.      That more traffic does not always equal more sales. Having visitors to your business website does not ensure profits anymore then having visitors to a retail store does… it only increases the odds. To make your search engine optimization campaign effective, and have your business make more money, you need an expert team that can help you create strong marketing messages, two.

5.      That taking shortcuts is the easiest way to hurt your business long-term. When business owners try to take shortcuts with SEO, one of two things typically happens: either they get disappointing results, which puts them even farther behind their competition, or they manage to have their sites "blacklisted" by sites like Google. Either way, these are not problems your company can afford to have.

There is a lot of "information" and "advice" out there about search engine optimization. To grow your business website, however, you need to be getting your information from a reputable source.
